Mrs Taylor, I just read your reply, thank you. I will give a big shout out to DOD teachers, all true professionals, everyone I had really cared about their students and I say we had the BEST education! I graduated 3 months early, sadly we left KCDI before I did graduate, then I enlisted in USAF in 76 (was stationed in Izmir in 78), retired in 95, currently working for NY state, will be retiring soon. Please tell your husband, Coach Flannery and Coach LaValley I said Hello and thank you for challenging me to strive to do the best I could at the things I tried. Do either of you remember Mike Yamnitz from St. Louis or Del Morgan from Indiana? I ran the Bull with Jim Ferrill from down south somewhere. My father was assigned to Det. 63 at KCDI. I was 7 when we arrived, 9 when we left (52 now). We lived in Yalova for a while, then got housing on base. Wonderful memories, still think about some of my friends there and wonder what they\'re doing. One of my favorite memories was being at the playground near the fence along the highway passing in front of base. A gypsy troupe was passing by. They had a dancing bear that did a little performance for us while we stood and watched from the other side of the fence.

Would love to hear from any of my friends if they still remember me. It\'s been a long time.

Was a young morse intercept operator, (2-T) freshly from Onna Point, Okinawa.

Please enter any comments here:

Married my wife Fatma, a local girl and Tom-Pane employee who worked at the Exchange on-base. We lived for a short time in Karamursel village before leaving the Air Force and returning to the ZI (1967).

Returned to visit family there in Yalova several times over the years, so the kids would have an appreciation for the other half of their culture. Our oldest son returns regularly to spend time with his Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. He speaks a bit of Turkish and enjoys the summers there.

Fatma and I visited two summers ago, having been away since before the earthquake. We saw many old friends and family. We also found the sleepy little hamlet of Yalova had grown up. Yalova today boasts a population of 160,000 (including the outskirts). Mostly rebuilt after the earthquake, the canal that once ran past the old American civic center downtown, is one of the few landmarks to be found. Of course, Ataturk Farm remains as does the Termal (resort). But now there are modern Hospitals, a University, several textile mills, and a rather large shopping mall.

The airbase is still there, part of the Turk military mission.

We took the bus to Karamursel Village (now a full fledged City) and saw our old apartment house. In the 60s, there were very few Americans living on that side of the base. The highway wasn\'t built yet, just a 2 lane dirt road. Now its a modern 4 lane divided pavement. Wider in some places.

That assignment to Turkey certainly changed our lives. Fatma and I will soon celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We are retired now and after raising 4 kids (all living in different U.S. states) have time to review.

Charlie Flt, I worked in SWAMP section, I\'ll never forget the sound of that signal, Russians knew we were listening, hah. Great bunch of guys and gals, however I do remember the first \"WAF\" to be stationed there, guys looked at her like a cow looking at a new gate. I was a dirt poor 2 striper living in Yalova but me and the wife enjoyed everything we could afford to do. Club drinks wre cheap. I noticed today wire reports say U.S. is trying to reach agreement with Turkey to use key air base, KCDI has an air strip, I hate ISIS and the war, but wouldnt that be nostalgic?

I served all of 1962 until June 27, 1963, as a 202. My desk was at the western wall. I came to work one morning for the day shift. There was an etch-a-sketch there next to my desk. A civilian had put it up overnight. He was a civilian from NSA, with the equivalent rank of Brig. General. He stayed some time and described the history of the machine. Interesting.

I was the 22 year old spouse of my husband, Glenn M. Franson, who was a Morse Code Interceptor "Ditty Bop" stationed at Karamursel, AFB. We lived "on the economy" in Yalova because he didn't have enought rank to bring me over (took a Charter Flight which cost $800 one-way in 1969!) and didn't have enough rank to have on-base housing.

I remember Glenn but I don't think I ever met his Wife. If I remember correctly he copied aircraft and I worked at the other end of the area "level 3" and listened to ships and weather reports. Glenn hung around with Earl Ward at work. Earl was also married and lived off base.

I was a CTR3 at Northwest, Va - I had been to HFDF school but due to the need I volunteered for DIRSUP. I went on 3 missions. I was due for re-up and the advancements were real slow due to the cutbacks from Nam 1974 - it took me a long time to make E-4 - PNA\'d first time - when I sat down second time I barely had to take test I had so many points - I passed test with flying colors - got rank Nov but did not get strip until March. I was fed up and got out. I had done everything for CTR2 but I figured it would take me forever to make Chief so I got out and became a Computer Programmer - Made lots more money but not as good of a retirement - anyway - my next duty station was to be Turkey - Good think I got out.

What was your Turkish Experience/Connection?

Was assigned to Tuslog Det 95 as Chief Supply Services, responsible for Base Housing, Commissary, Clothing Store, Dining Hall, Laundry, etc. Had a wonderful time in Turkey. Traveled all over the Mideast and Europe. Met great friends and had great times at the O Club. Did miss real milk and real ice cream and, naturally, TV. Would not have missed this assignment for anything.

What was your Turkish Experience/Connection?

Was assigned to Karamursel, Det 95, as Chief Supply Services (Housing, BOQ, VOQ, Laundry, Dining Hall, Commissary, Clothing Store, etc.) Arrived at Karamursel in June \'67 and started two of the best years of my life.We made great friends, traveled all over the Mideast and Europe, and had experiences we never would have had in the States. Spent a great deal of time at the OC (Oh, those slot machines). The base was a world in itself. We had everything that we needed, except for real milk, real ice cream, and TV.

While at Karamusel, I was the chief supply inspector and Bldg custdoian for the warehouses, at which time I was informed that one of the warehouses was full of submarine parts for the Turkish Navy, (this was during the US/Turkish embargo). They knew that the parts were shipped. They didn\'t kwow where they were but looking for them and didn\'t know that I had the keys to rhe bulding they were in thank The Lord.

What was your Turkish Experience/Connection?

I was stationed at Karamursel Air Station from 11/65 to 4/66 as a Bulgarian \"squirrel\" with Dog Flight. I got a \"Dear John\" letter from my girlfriend who was pregnant by another guy; my little sister of sixteen got pregnant; my parents were talking about getting a divorce; I was on the bowling team; I was on the baseball team; I was on the basketball team; I was taking two U. of Maryland courses. I stayed up all night drinking and just \"lost it.\" I was sent to Wiesbaden, Germany for two weeks of mental health evaluation. I then was sent to Lackland AFB and stayed in the hospital for three months. I got an Honorable Discharge. I still have emotional problems but, as my past therapists told me, \"well, you tried.\" I still have dreams of being in the \"Ops\" building and being called upon for a translation as I had the \"Golden Ear\" and was transcribing after five months as I was top in my class at Goodfellow AFB. If anybody who remembers me is reading this...guys, I am sorry and thanks for the great times we had during the time I served at KAS. Peace...

To my old Italian roomie from Philly \"Spidermonkey\"...thanks much.
To my bowling partner Bill who was the clean-up guy...my 181 average was the best I ever bowled.
To Sgt. Leddy who bought my Beatles and Barbra Streisand records...enjoy.
To the others who were my friends at Basic, Language School in Monterey, California and KAS...BE WELL...
